| ARTIST STATEMENT... | |||
As an artist, I am inspired by the way things look in the world around me and on my canvas. I want my artwork to first engage the eye and then the mind. It is my hope that if a painting is visually interesting it will lead to further contemplation. My paintings are grounded in the tradition of realism but with a contemporary investigation into surface and pictorial space. Their compositions invite viewers to consider metaphorical and psychological interpretations. The objects I paint serve as symbolic containers occupied by our thoughts and feelings. Their meanings contemplate states of openness and awareness. My subject matter is informed by experiences of emotion and vision as well as art history, critical theory, and contemporary art making practice. Visual poetry is my intention. These paintings are a reminder to let your hopes and dreams out of the box. |
